We share the view that the best way to learn science is to do science, so we incorporate elements of research in majority of our science classes starting from the introductory level. All students taking science classes have a chance to get some idea about research process in the lab or in the field.

For students interested in a research career, we offer diverse opportunities to participate in a real life professional research. There are two main options to participate in it:

First, our own Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI), offering interested and motivated students the opportunity to do research on campus during the six summer weeks with one of our own MSD professors.

In 2010 MSD started SURI, and Dr. Michael Godsey was the first with his students who spent six weeks at Concordia Chemistry labs doing research in Biochemistry. Since then Dr. Iordanov, Dr. Johnson, and Dr. Wise participated in SURI with their students, performing original research on Concordia Campus. All SURI participants are provided with stipend, and free housing on campus when doing SURI research. Results of SURI research are presented at annual September SURI symposium, which serves the purpose of informal gathering of everybody interested, as well as a celebration of “Curiosity and Efforts!” (motto of SURI). Later, with results processed further, students present their works at annual Murdock College Science Research Conference (MCSRC), and at Oregon Academy of Science (OAS) Conference (which was hosted by Concordia University and MSD in 2010.)

If your interests lie beyond the fields our professors are working in, we invite you to apply to the Murdock Charitable Trust scholarship, supporting students interested in natural science and medicine. If you are selected, you will have a chance to do research at the leading national health-care and scientific research institutions such as Oregon Health Science University (OHSU), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), etc.
